Networking
If you look up “network” in the Oxford Dictionary, you’ll
get this definition: “a group of people who exchange information,
contacts, and experience for professional or social purposes.”
However, ask 10 people what networking is and you’ll probably
get 10 different answers.
Networking is a great opportunity to get to know other people.
But networking isn't just talking - it's talking for a purpose.
The first step in developing a network is to decide why you are
networking in the first place. Is it for leads, referrals, etc.?
You need to narrow your scope.
In order to network, one must have a network. One simple way to
build a network is to get involved in a professional or fraternal
organization. This enables people to get to know you and your strengths
on a more personal level. Some organizations, such as Business Network
International (or BNI), exist for the sole purpose of networking.
Now what do I do?
After meeting a new contact, make sure you note where you met them
and other pertinent information. Ask about their profession and
business and make sure that you both exchange information.
Also, be sure to always ask for permission to follow up. Even though
everyone you meet may not lead to a prospective client, you never
know whom he or she may pass your name along to.
Networking is reciprocal
Networking is a great way to advance your career, but you have to
remember that networking is an exchange. By freeloading, you potentially
create the opposite effect you desire. Be generous to your contacts
and you will receive the same in return.
